Just a little oneshot for now. An idea I was hit with last night before going to bed... mostly just a chance to torment Crona some.
Faltering Trust
Crona let out a contented sigh as he settled himself on the couch. The day had been a full one, what with spending most of it with Silver and all, and Crona was glad to be home. For the first time in a long time, he truly felt safe. Medusa hadn’t dared to show her face since Silver had become Crona’s protector, and the boy liked it that way. He felt as though he didn’t need to worry anymore. Everything was just fine. Little did he know as he began to fall asleep on his couch that he was in for a rude awakening.
“Did you have fun today?” a cold, familiar voice asked. Crona felt himself stiffen when he realized who it belonged to. At first, Crona didn’t dare turn around. He didn’t want to confirm his suspicions. However, despite that Crona did turn around at last. To his horror, Medusa was right behind him and leaning against the wall. Her glare could have pierced even the bravest man’s soul.
“L-Lady M-Medusa!” Crona squeaked. Almost as if he had sensed something was wrong, Ragnarok appeared and met Medusa’s gaze. The demon sword was fully prepared to transform so Crona could fight. However, as Crona readied himself to tell Ragnarok to transform, Medusa just laughed.
“Don’t worry, I’m not here to kill you... today. I was just curious about how your day went. I imagine you quite like your protector. What was his name? Silver?” Medusa asked, turning her gaze away and putting on a mock pondering expression. This truly confused Crona. What was she getting at? Crona dropped his defenses partially and offered Medusa a confused look, almost as if he was begging for her to explain. “It’s a shame you can’t trust him.” Medusa said casually, resulting in a soft gasp to escape Crona.
“W-What do you mean? Of course I can trust Mr. Silver!” Crona said quickly. “Mr. Silver promised he’d protect me from you.”
“Yes, well, promises are cheap Crona. Surely you must know that by now.” Medusa countered idly. Crona flinched visibly, tearing his gaze away from Medusa almost as if he didn’t want to believe her. Partially, however, the pink-haired boy wanted her to say more. “You do know he’s working for us, right?” Medusa asked. Crona raised his head a little at that question. How did she know he was a double agent? “Don’t play dumb, Crona. John Silver has been playing both sides for his own ends. Once he’s achieved his goals, he’ll drop you like a hot rock.”
“That’s n-not true!” Crona retorted.
“Oh, but it is Crona. How long have you known this man?” Medusa asked. She had changed her position, moving closer to Crona so she could put her arms around him in a mock embrace. If she had wanted to, she could have ended him right then and there. Crona knew this, and flinched at her touch.
“Crona’s known him long enough to realize he can trust him more than you!” Ragnarok responded for Crona, glaring long and hard at the witch as he gripped Crona’s shoulder. He didn’t care if he was causing his meister pain in that moment. He wanted Medusa to know that she wasn’t welcome and that he wasn’t going to listen to her. The demon sword didn’t realize that Crona, on the other hand, wanted her to go on. “It’ll be a cold day in hell the day we trust you over him.” Ragnarok stated boldy.
“Big words for such a little demon sword.” Medusa taunted. Ragnarok was more than irritated by that remark, but if Medusa did care about that she didn’t show it. Crona could tell she was more interested in him. “Listen, Crona. I know you don’t trust me. After all, I do want to kill you. I just want you to take this into consideration.” Medusa told him. Crona’s fearful gaze met Medusa’s, and the snake witch grinned maliciously. Crona could only imagine how much she was enjoying tormenting him. “I know enough about your protector to tell you that he’s not incapable of abandoning his clients. As soon as he gets the chance, he’s going to stab you in the back. When he does, I’ll be ready.” Medusa whispered, sending a chill down Crona’s spine.
“But… he…” Crona was clearly on the verge of letting his emotions shatter him again. He didn’t want to believe Medusa. He couldn’t believe her! Silver had sworn to protect him. He would do that… wouldn’t he? Could Medusa really be telling the truth?
“Speechless, I see. How… delightful.” Medusa chuckled. “Trust me, my boy. As soon as Silver sees his opportunity, he’ll leave you. When he does, I won’t say I told you so.” she stated. “This is where I leave you tonight, Crona. I want you to carefully consider what I’ve said, and think about all that Silver has done. I could spare you the heartache of being betrayed. All you have to do is ask.”
“We ain’t buying any of your crap, Medusa! Get lost!” Ragnarok snapped. That seemed to be enough for Medusa, as she just casually shrugged and walked away from Crona and Ragnarok. Crona’s gaze never left her, and he watched as she turned around and offered one last mocking look to the boy and his weapon.
“You know where to find me, I’m sure. Just think about my offer, Crona. Regardless, I will kill you. And Silver won’t be there to protect you.” Medusa hissed. And without another word, she was gone.
“Man, who does that bitch think she is? We know who we can trust, don’t we Crona. …Crona?” Ragnarok asked, looking down at his meister as he did. Crona didn’t reply. Tears were welling up in his eyes as he slunk down to the ground. “Hey, wimpy, snap out of it! Medusa was only saying that to unnerve you. Don’t let it work! I’m talking to you! Snap out of it!” Ragnarok snapped. Croan didn’t seem to be listening anymore, though.
A lie… was everything he knew a lie? Had Silver really just been playing him for a fool? No… that couldn’t be. Crona knew it couldn’t be. Silver had promised… he promised…
Crona didn’t finish his thought, instead curling up on the floor and letting his tears flow. “Crona! I said snap out of it!” Ragnarok ordered.
“R-Ragnarok, j-just… just leave me alone.” Crona whimpered. He didn’t want to believe what Medusa had said. He couldn’t believe what she had told him. Yet, Crona found himself believing her once more. His tears were brought about by fear. Fear that Medusa was right. Fear that everything he knew about Silver had been a lie. Fear… that he had been betrayed. Despite Ragnarok’s urging, Crona didn’t move from that spot on the floor for the rest of the night. Just like always, he had let his thoughts be manipulated by her. Now he didn’t know who to trust.
